A 2019 study by the Delphi Behavioral Health Group, surveying more than 1,000 full-time workers, found that hangover-related symptoms frequently carry into the workday—quietly undermining focus, efficiency, and safety.


The study revealed that:

  • Workers use an average of two sick days per year due to hangovers
  • 75% reported going to work while hungover
  • In a typical eight-hour day, only about five hours were spent being productive
  • 46.3% admitted to appearing busy rather than actually working
  • 46% reported excessive bathroom use related to symptoms
  • 19% said they slept during work hours
  • 39% made mistakes they attributed to being hungover
  • 10% missed important deadlines
  • 5% experienced a workplace injury


Hangovers aren’t the only issue. Coming to work while sick is even more widespread. In a separate 2019 survey, 90% of respondents reported working despite being ill. The most common reasons were fear of falling behind (54%) and reluctance to use limited sick time (40%). This behavior also increases exposure risks for others—particularly immunocompromised individuals, who make up nearly 3% of the U.S. adult population.


Taken together, these findings highlight how preventable conditions—from hangovers to colds and flu—can quietly reduce performance, increase errors, and introduce ongoing health risks in professional environments.
