When Sick Days Aren’t the Answer

Recharge at Work

Many assume that people avoid work when dealing with hangovers, but research suggests otherwise. A 2019 study by the Delphi Behavioral Health Group, surveying more than 1,000 full-time workers, found that hangover-related symptoms frequently carry into the workday—quietly undermining focus, efficiency, and safety.

The study revealed that:

  • Workers use an average of two sick days per year due to hangovers
  • 75% reported going to work while hungover
  • In a typical eight-hour day, only about five hours were spent being productive
  • 46.3% admitted to appearing busy rather than actually working
  • 46% reported excessive bathroom use related to symptoms
  • 19% said they slept during work hours
  • 39% made mistakes they attributed to being hungover
  • 10% missed important deadlines
  • 5% experienced a workplace injury

Hangovers aren’t the only issue. Coming to work while sick is even more widespread. In a separate 2019 survey, 90% of respondents reported working despite being ill. The most common reasons were fear of falling behind (54%) and reluctance to use limited sick time (40%). This behavior also increases exposure risks for others—particularly immunocompromised individuals, who make up nearly 3% of the U.S. adult population.

Taken together, these findings highlight how preventable conditions—from hangovers to colds and flu—can quietly reduce performance, increase errors, and introduce ongoing health risks in professional environments.

Feeling run down doesn’t always mean staying home—but fatigue, dehydration, headaches, stress, and nutrient depletion can make it difficult to perform at your best. Pushing through discomfort or sacrificing sick days shouldn’t be the only options.
